Moliere's Imaginary Invalid by EXPT Theatre

EXPT Theatre proudly presents to you the Imaginary Invalid, written by Moliere. It will be staged on the 30th and 31st of July, at the KH Kala Soudha, Hanumantha Nagar. The show is at 7.30pm on all days and tickets are available at IndianStage, Buzzintown and the venue on the day of the show.

Directed by Nakul.P.Sangolli, the play promises to entertain you to the fullest with the finest French comedy offered by Moliere. With interesting characterization and thoughtful use of lights and music, be ready for an interesting evening of theatre.

Le Malade imaginaire (The Imaginary Invalid) was the last play written by Moliere and was first performed in February 1673 in Paris. A satire of the medical profession, the play contains a good deal of farce and was written to amuse King Louis XIV. It is also a superb character study of a hypochondriac, or a patient obsessed with being ill, and it contains a brilliant social and political commentary on Paris in the 1670s. Argan, the invalid in the play, plots to get his daughter married to a doctor, hailing from a family of doctors in order to have them around to tend him for free. But will the daughter agree to marry him? Is there a reason behind Beline’s affection to her husband Argan? What means will Toinette, the maid employ to alter the proceedings?

The play has been adapted to an Indian scenario based in the 70’s, with a South Indian Christian family reliving the same roles. In an attempt to appeal to the audience of our times, this take is as hilarious as the one written by Molière.

"MAYA"-Beyond the illusion of time and perception. A piece performed and choreographed by Veena Basavarajaiah created at the Gati Residency, New Delhi, August 2009

Can you go back in time? Is there time? What is the point of reference? Are we ageing? Have you experienced stillness? perception of the world is limited to the things that we can touch, taste, smell and see,Can we look beyond the sphere of perception ? Experience beyond light?
The dormant eye of the mind - the only vision capable of giving the whole picture, able to see things and make connections that the inferior senses couldn't even comprehend, lays low in a state of unused perceived extinction.. 'Maya' piece explores the concept of the illusion of perception and Mechanical time.

Sita-A Movement monologue by Veena Basavarajaiah

"Snusha Dashrathasya thwam, raamasya Mahishee priya, janakasya sutharaagnaha, swagathamthe pathivrathe"

One who is Dashrathas' daughter-in-law, and the dear wife of raama, who is also the daughter of Janaka , I welcome thee, the chaste one!

Ramayana essentially a literary work on Indian politics and society portrays Sita as the archetype of an Indian Woman being the perfect daughter and an ideal wife..  This piece takes you on an emotional journey of the Ramayana from a womans' perspective. A movement monolugue that gives you an insight into her mind , body and soul. A contemporary performance exploring the abhinaya aspects of Bharatnatyam is set to the original verses of Valmiki Ramayana.  The movement vocabulary of Sita– followed the [histrionic] tenet of bharatanatyam ' yatho hastha , thatho drishti...'which demands of the performer that ‘where the hand goes, the eye follows’. As for the music, the rhythm of the verses from the text to add voice to movements. the music and movements stimulate each other and have some sort of a dialogue
